Whitney Ontario, known as the gateway to Algonquin Park, is nestled at the southeast end of the park along the Highway 60 corridor.
Tucked away near the eastern entrance – otherwise known as the East Gate – of Algonquin Provincial Park, this quaint community embodies the essence of rugged beauty and serene tranquillity. It's more than just a dot on the map; it's a place where nature whispers its secrets, where the air is crisp, and where time seems to slow down.
Whitney's story is woven with threads of history, tracing back to Indigenous origin. In the 1890s it became a hub for logging and timber. The echoes of the past still resonate through the towering forests and the meandering rivers that once served as vital arteries for transportation, timber and tourism. You can see some of these stories for yourself along the Logging Museum Trail.
Today, remnants of this heritage can be found in the form of historic sites and landmarks that dot the landscape, reminding us of those who shaped the area's landscape and industry into what it is today.
Yet, Whitney isn’t just the gateway to Algonquin Park. It has more to offer – it has comfort, it has fun!

The old rail trail and the madawaska river in whitney ontario
If you’re looking for a stretch of trail to stretch your legs on that’s every bit as beautiful and as historical as anything in Algonquin Park, you can catch the Old Rail Trail trailhead in Whitney, right beside the MadMusher Restaurant. This is the beginning of a 40km stretch of trail that runs the entire length of the township following the path once taken by the Ottawa-Arnprior-Parry Sound (OAPS) Railway.
Recently resurfaced, the Old Rail Trail can support hikers, bikers, motorized sports and even wheelchairs and baby buggies. The walk (which can be as long or as short as you like) takes you along the headwaters of the beautiful Madawaska River’s rapids. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, “headwater” means the place the river starts.
